SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1999 - A neighbor comes over with a problem--a BIG TIME problem!
This morning a neighbor showed up wanting us to take a stray mother dog and her six 10-week-old, white Spitz mix pups. The small stray dog (who they had thought was a male) had wandered up to their house quite a while ago and stayed around their house so they began feeding it. Next thing they knew there were six little puppies living beneath their front porch. Now the pups were bigger and not hiding anymore, but had been untouched by human hands for so long they were "untame" little fellas who could not be caught.
I followed our neighbor to his house to see if there was anything I could do to help catch the pups. They are adorable and the six of them scattered in all directions when we drove up. But what immediately caught my eye was the mommie dog. This small, white Spitz mix mommie dog looked sick to me, and from the sound of her quiet but frequent cough I had the feeling she might have heartworms.
It will take the pups a little time to gain their trust in humans, but they are still so young and not wild (as Bob and Briar were) so with a little patience by the "owners" it seems as tho they'd be able to catch the pups and find them good homes.
I told our neighbor about the local county humane society who may be able to at least help catch the little fellows, and with the puppies being so cute, once caught they surely would be very adoptable. The neighbor said he'd keep in touch.
The End of a Busy Day--Annie Goes to Her New Home!
Late this afternoon, during the middle of my final dog rounds, I realized we still were going to be one kennel short when Skipper joined our Happy Home in a day or two. Then I thought that if Sue could possibly take Annie tomorrow or the next day, this would solve our kennel space problem, so I called Sue, and left a voice mail message, asking if she might be able to pick up Annie early.
Wow! One hour after my message to Sue, she and Mike drove up our hill. They decided their house was all "puppy-proofed" and ready for Annie and they were really excited to be able to have her join their family so they came to take her home.
