In response to the 11/7/99 article in The Dallas Morning News shelter-saving donations (which thanks to you all have put us several weeks ahead of our ever-increasing expenses) are being accompanied by many requests to take in more homeless dogs. If we will just take their dogs, several people have offered to build us additional kennels, which including dog houses enclosed in sturdy wooden shelters cost us about $1,000 each to construct.
We've received very few inquiries about adopting from the now 47 dogs at Straydog--our Happy Home for Strays. And no adoptions yet in response to the 11/7/99 article.
WE NEED FOSTER CARE PEOPLE:
This week alone we have gotten four phone calls asking us to take in stray dogs. Our shelter is full (as are all of the other shelters these people have contacted).
If we had animal-loving foster care homes lined up, we would be able to help place more homeless dogs.
Can You Help by Giving Foster Care to a homeless dog or cat?
Please call 903-676-5013 if you are able to help with Foster Care.
We received a call last evening from a woman desperately needing homes for five dogs--by noon tomorrow (December 6, 1999), a deadline set by her local police.
The underlying root problem MUST be solved: STOP RUNAWAY POPULATION GROWTH THROUGH SPAY AND NEUTER!
It would be much less expensive for us as a society to implement a program to collectively pay veterinarians to spay and neuter dogs (and cats) at no charge to their owners than to continue to pursue our current animal control policies. The second part of such a program--educating people to take advantage of the free spay and neuter program--would be essential but would most likely be very difficult to achieve since at this point in time a significant number of people aren't even aware that an overpopulation problem exists.
Complete financial records are available upon request.
Dog food, veterinary expenses and kennel crew wages have been running over $1,800 per week, and we are quite often literally paying this week's expenses with this week's donations. We, Pat and Bill Arnold, receive no remuneration whatsoever for any work we do for our no-kill shelter, which includes managing it. (Bill pays our bills from his salary from his regular job in Dallas.)
We continue to thank those who continue to write us such encouraging letters and e-mail messages letting us know that you believe in what we are doing at Straydog (our Happy Home for Strays) as we continue to provide a decent life (as long as may be necessary) for each of our now 46 rescued dogs!
