Pat's Daily Dog Log

MONDAY MAY 26 2003

Our outdoor shelter work continues even on rainy days

This was another very cool, gray, rainy morning, but luckily there was no thunder, and Alice was okay. Work went on as usual during the intermittent downpours, and the daily schedule continued without interruption. (The only thing that ever stops us temporarily is lightning.)

There is always so much outside work to be done, especially in the summer

Rhonda was teaching new employee, Pam, the dog walking routine in the downpour, and Pam was a real trouper! The rain didn't appear to bother her one bit, and Rhonda is used to it. All of our team members need to be able to endure the extremes of our ever-changing weather, since we all have to work outside in it every single day good or bad weather. None of us minds working in the rain, especially in the summer. It's a good way to keep cool! (Working outside in the winter on those 20- to 30-degree, frosty, wet, sleety, icy cold days is another story, but we still do it.)

Joel got sopping wet too as he completed the many jobs on his long list of things to do, which included putting up a double entrance gate for Tinkerbell and Megan's kennel after the two pups were moved again today so they could be closer to the house in order for me to be able to give them more attention.

Joel carries a gate section to put together an entrance gate on Megan and Tinkerbell's new kennel.

This is what we refer to as an "entrance gate"--two gate sections to make the kennel more secure.

Then Joel and part-time employee, Matthew, who is helping us for the summer, brought more sandy soil in from outside the big fence to add to Chubs and Cassie's kennel. We've had so many rainy days lately that much of the dirt floor in several of the kennels has begun to wash away.

Matthew wheels in some sandy dirt to build up the kennel floor.

Another part-time kennel team member, Randy, got drenched as he cleaned the kennels, but he had a smile on his face the whole morning.

Tina was busy with kennel work too, plus keeping up with the extra work of scrubbing clean the extra dog houses so they will be ready to use, when needed.

As the morning wore on and the rain continued to come down, little Tinkerbell and her new special friend, Puppy Megan, who is deaf, had a nice snooze curled up together beneath the protection of their kennel roof top.

All the dogs enjoyed the cool weather today, taking snoozes or romping around in the rain with their kennel companions.
