Bill Arnold continues
to work (without pay) every day for Straydog Inc. Pat and Bill's
four
children (all in their 30s and 40s with full-time jobs) are also
volunteering (and two working
part time) helping Straydog continue to operate exactly as Pat
would have wanted.
(As always complete
financial records are available on request.)
Straydog,
our Happy Home for Strays
(The
hexagon is "The Big Play Yard," which we usually refer
to as "the park")
(Photo taken May 2002)
Straydog
is a "lifeboat" (and sanctuary) for rescued dogs. A
vacant spot in a kennel is an empty seat in our "lifeboat,"
so please, if you're interested in adopting a dog, see our "Dogs
for Adoption" links below, or call to inquire about dogs
you may have seen recent photos of but who may not yet be included
in our "Dogs for Adoption" links.
And
please
continue to support us. We will continue to row this "lifeboat"
to shore, dropping off rescued dogs into the arms of
good adopters, and we will continue to fill the space left vacant
by each adopted dog with another desperate
homeless dog for as long as we can hold on (financially). We believe
that the example of our sacrifice (and the
example of the sacrifices made by the people running all other
no-kill shelters) must be publicized to wake people up
and make them aware of the necessity to SPAY and NEUTER their pets so that homeless dog-rescue
"lifeboats" will
no longer be necessary. (Ditto for cats!)

may sound elaborate, but
my and Pat's son, Joe (who's a computer technician at SMU), knows
how to hook up stuff
like this at very little expense.)

SUNDAY AUGUST
31 2003
A rainy, gray day, making
temperatures much cooler--77 degrees at six o'clock p.m.
The
dogs love it! The rain has been heavy at time, but there
is very little breeze, so the rain's been falling straight down.
And with no lightning and thunder the dogs (especially those who
are very afraid of thunder) didn't mind walking around their kennels
with the cooling water falling on their backs.
Blind Chubs stands
in the rain cooling off.
Teddy's wet enough
and decides to go inside his shelter.
Before the rain started,
Angel let us know she would prefer her outside kennel
Angel's been staying in one of the
living room kennels since she came home Friday after her surgery
Thursday, but after I took her for an outing in the park this
morning, she stood firmly by the main gate expecting to be taken
back to her and Old Pup's kennel. She hasn't been bothering her
stitches, so I deferred to her wishes.

her living room kennel
Angel checks out
her kennel while Pup and their neighbor, Pepsi, watch this stranger
who's been gone for only three days.
Max, who just got shaved,
received a nice email from his old buddy Tommy Tootles
Hey, Max, this is your old
friend and buddy, Tommy Tootles. I really know just how you feel
about this grooming business. My mom and dad let my coat get a
bit too long in the winter, and they do their best to keep me
"groomed" (that means get some of the mats out), and
I do appreciate that. Spring is another matter. Off to our groomer
they take me, and I come home looking just like you do in your
latest picture.
Max when he came
home from the groomer this past Thursday.
And, my guardians say the
same thing about me: "Wow, he isn't fat after all!"
Don't worry, it will grow out, and I think it is really comfortable
to have less hair in the summer.
The only bad thing that
ever happened was when a new groomer shaved me down to the skin
and left a big lion's mane around my neck, and, as you know, I
have only a stub for a tail, and they cut it into a great big
round puff ball, just like poodles wear. I wanted to hide under
the bed and never come out. My guardian mom took pity on me and
did some trimming so my tail and neck didn't look so silly.
Max, please say "Woof!"
to all my friends at Straydog, and tell them I hope they find
as happy a forever home as I have.
Oh, did they tell you that
we adopted Candy in February of this year? (She was the real shy,
scared little girl.) Well, if you could see her now, you would
be so surprised. She is so loving, happy and playful, and she
greets folks at the door and just loves our big back yard to run
circles in and she thinks squirrels were made just for her enjoyment
to chase them up the tree. We share our toys and just get along
great.
To all the caregivers and
Bill and all of his family, Candy and I and our mom and dad say
you are the GREATEST, and we salute you for your wonderful work.

A
Note from Pat from about a year ago ... A long-time friend and supporter of
our Happy Home for Strays called recently and suggested that we
always print the following words on our webpage and in our newsletters: "Please keep us in your prayers and remember
us in your will."
Our friend
(and supporter) pointed out that many retired contributors are
living on the limited earnings from their investments (as is he),
and they cannot afford to send very large donations but would
be able to help us by remembering Straydog Inc. in their wills,
as this friend and supporter has done.
