Bill Arnold's Daily Straydog Log

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 11 2003

Last evening Charlie and Jana came as scheduled to work with Chubs and Cassie

The training session went well, and I snapped a photo of our volunteer trainers with the two trainees just before sunset.

Jana tries to hold Blind Chocolate Chubs still while Charlie holds a ball for Cassie, who's waiting for a throw.

A new arrival we've named Daisy runs up to Randy in the middle of the night

Our overnight man, Randy Hopkins, was outside the big wood security fence checking the perimeter when he saw what he thought was a coyote not too far away from him. Suddenly the animal came running toward Randy, and as it got closer, Randy was relieved to see it was a big puppy dog and not a coyote. Randy wrote in the log that the little dog was very friendly and very skinny and "smelled terrible." He secured the dog in a small temporary kennel and got some food and water for the stray.

We think Daisy may have been dumped near our property. Randy reported that he had heard a small truck driving slowly up and down our side road just a short while before Daisy came up to him.

A lot of these primitive pet-dumping people must not realize that abandoning a pet is punishable by jail time and a large fine. From now on Randy will get the license plate number of any other vehicles he hears throughout the night, and we will have any future pet dumpers prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Daisy was lucky to make it to Randy. Most strays who happen into our immediate area are shot and killed by our neighbors, many of whom will shoot a stray dog as readily and remorselessly as civilized people will smack and kill a mesquito.

Daisy goes to the vet clinic

First thing this morning after it got light, Juana took Daisy in for her new arrival checkup, which will include spay surgery, and we'll pick her up tomorrow.

Daisy looks a lot like Scotty, and we're hoping Scotty will accept Daisy into his kennel.

Prince goes to the groomer again thanks to Ofelia's generous donation

Prince had already been to a different groomer a few weeks ago, but the groomer had missed a whole bunch of mats on Prince's chest and belly, so Ofelia said send him again to a better groomer, and we did.

We picked up Prince with blue bows behind his ears at about 3:30 this afternoon.
