We
are in desperate need of
funding at Straydog!
(but
we are starting to get good response to this message from our
regular contributors who regularly read our website updates along
with new contributors, a lot of whom have phoned in credit card
donations. The newsletter will begin mailing Monday, and a week
after that, we should be alright for a couple of months. It's
expensive running a no-kill shelter the way Pat Arnold insisted
it be run, though our expenses per dog average less than many
shelters and sanctuaries.)

(As always, complete
financial records are available on request.)
Since
Pat's death Bill Arnold continues to work (without pay) all day
every day for Straydog Inc., managing
the shelter exactly as Pat would have wanted. Pat and Bill's four
children (all in their 30s and 40s with
full-time jobs) are also helping out a lot at Straydog, trying
to carry on their mother's mission of
providing decent lives for dogs who have no one.
Straydog, our Happy Home
for Strays
(The
hexagon is "The Big Play Yard," which we usually refer
to as "the park")
(Photo taken May 2002)
Straydog is a "lifeboat"
(and sanctuary) for rescued dogs. A vacant spot in a kennel is
an empty seat in our "lifeboat,"
so please, if you're interested in adopting a dog, see our "Dogs
for Adoption" links below, or call to inquire about dogs
you may have seen recent photos of but who may not yet be included
in our "Dogs for Adoption" links.
And
please
continue to support us. We will continue to row this "lifeboat"
to shore, dropping off rescued dogs into the arms of
good adopters, and we will continue to fill the space left vacant
by each adopted dog with another desperate
homeless dog for as long as we can hold on (financially). We believe
that the example of our sacrifice (and the
example of the sacrifices made by the people running all other
no-kill shelters) must be publicized to wake people up
and make them aware of the necessity to SPAY and NEUTER their pets so that homeless dog-rescue
"lifeboats" will
no longer be necessary. (Ditto for cats!)
"All
stray dogs
to lucky dogs ... NOW!"

Old Pup is on the mend!
Dr.
Morton called this morning a little after seven o'clock, and I
told him that Ol' Pup was looking a lot better and that he had
had a fairly normal bowl movement (dark colored but no blood)
and that he had eaten about a third of a meal of Gerber turkey
and vegetable baby food. I asked Dr. Morton if we should bring
Pup in tomorrow morning, and he said, "'We'll talk first.
See how Ol' Pup's doing. Just stay the course."
[Photos to come of
Old Pup during an outing in the park.]
Working on the mailer
I've
spend most of the day working on the mailer instead of this website,
so now we're even further behind here, especially with photos.
I've logged 51 photos this week (mostly this weekend) that I haven't
had time to process, drop into a page and upload onto any of them
onto our website. Tomorrow's going to be another "mailer"
day. We cannot not put everyone we can spare on this project.
Only about 200 regulars hit this website every day. There are
more than 2,500 people on our mailing list. Therefore 2,300 of
our faithful contributors have not yet seen our plea for help.
Kerry meets and moves in
with Boomer
This
move allowed us to put Sasha in with Colby, whom Sasha had kenneled
with before her adoption. Everything's working out fine so far.
Kerry and Boomer met in
the park this past Sunday and they got along fine.
Back in Boomer's kennel
they had a grand time chasing each other around the shelter.
When Boomer gets tired of
playing, he jumps up on his shelter roof, leaving his kennel mate
below.

Old Pup is doing better
today
He
wags his tail, and his eyes look much better, and most importantly
he's stopped passing blood. By phone our vet said things are looking
much better for Old Pup.
No adoptions today, but
we thank all our volunteers!
Angela's
back from a bout with the flu, and in addition to our other regular
regulars we are grateful to have received the help of volunteers
from Highland Park High School, who were fulfilling the requirements
of a class while thoroughly enjoying themselves while being very
serious about their volunteer work helping out Straydog with our
dogs today.
[Lots of photos to
come]
Buffy ate dinner
The
vet thought it might be a sore on his tongue, so we gave him some
easy-to-eat food, and Buffy's appetite came back. So, he's okay.
Sasha is returned to Straydog
Sasha
needs a family willing to put her through Obedience Training!
She was too big to be jumping on the daughter, and too rambunctious
to follow basic commands the family gave her. We could tell that
the father had become attached to Sasha as he knelt down to say
goodbye to her. He explained that Sasha wasn't a 'bad' dog, but
without knowing or obeying simple commands this Golden Retriever
is way too much for a family with a young daughter. The adults
were also having difficulty walking her on a leash, he said.
We
knew Sasha, and we knew it wouldn't be easy, so we have her back,
and we'll find her another home.
Credit Card Donations
are being phoned in
Special
thanks to those who have called in and/or emailed in credit card
donations. All we have to have is the card number, the name on
the card, the expiration date and the billing address. It is really
simple, and we don't pay a very high fee for this Internet credit
card service. After going to their website, I type in my password,
and once in, I plug in the information the contributor has given
to me, and the Internet credit card people transfer the donation
instantaneously into Straydog's bank account, which is Straydog's
operating fund, which is Straydog's only fund. Thanks to everyone
who is helping us!

A
Note from Pat from over a year ago ... A long-time friend and supporter of
our Happy Home for Strays called recently and suggested that we
always print the following words on our webpage and in our newsletters: "Please keep us in your prayers and remember
us in your will."
Our friend
(and supporter) pointed out that many retired contributors are
living on the limited earnings from their investments (as is he),
and they cannot afford to send very large donations but would
be able to help us by remembering Straydog Inc. in their wills,
as this friend and supporter has done.

The Neal Fort articles upped our readership! Every bit of media

We
really want to thank Neal a lot for getting Straydog and our website
