Bill Arnold's Daily Straydog Log

TUESDAY DECEMBER 23 2003

Rover had his surgery about noon today, and we picked him up at 5:30 p.m.

When Michael arrived back at Straydog with Rover, the old fella was still groggy from the anesthetic, and Randy, who helped get Rover out of Michael's car, had to carry Rover into the hospital trailer. Rover's eyes are open, but he's still not able to stand up. We called the clinic right away, and Dr. Morton's assistant said that it is very common for dogs to take this long for the effects of the anesthesia to wear off. The reason we are unfamiliar with this, the assistant said, is that in the past our dogs have always stayed over night at the clinic after surgery. But there was really no reason for Rover to stay over night as this was a relatively minor surgery. How does Rover look in his E-collar?

Caregiver Randy Hopkins has to carry Rover from the van into our "hospital" after surgery.

Randy has to lay Rover down in his new hospital kennel.

Rover lies without moving much at all for the next several hours till the anesthetic wears off.

Randy Hopkins, the overnight man, reports at 8:40 p.m. that Rover's coming to

Randy says that Rover has moved up onto his pillow, so I think everything's going to be all right with Rover.

Long-time supporters, Tom and Rhonda Grisak, and their son, Jason, came to visit today, bringing a big box of goodies for the dogs

As with all visitors the Grisaks were very impressed by how clean everything is at Straydog and that there is no unpleasant odor, which, as I explained to them, is because our kennel crew is constantly picking up you know what. The Grisaks enjoyed their grand tour, and little Jason really had fun petting most of the dogs through the kennel fencing. They also got some hands-on visiting with some of the dogs in the park.
