Erin's Saturday Adoption Day Report ...

Henry's family came into PetsMart today

The family who adopted Henry last Saturday came into Petsmart today to say hello and pick up Henry's heartworm preventive pill (which we had told them we wanted to give them as the pill is due now), and they also wanted buy a crate/kennel for Henry. They thought they might begin using the large, see-through crate at bedtime, or when company comes over, or whenever they need to. They don't want to leave Henry outside for long periods. Henry is an inside dog and "a snuggler," the mom said. Henry was renamed Judd, so the youngest boy could pronounce his name. 'Judd' chases this little boy around the coffee table and I'm sure is very gentle with him. We didn't hear any complaints! The family now has Judd's tags on his collar with their phone number too. They are getting things in order for their new family member, and so far everything seems to be working fine! They will be able to bring 'Judd' up to PetsMart in two weeks, and the mom said she had taken pictures to show us too. (For some reason I can't get these photos off the email. With my very limited computer skills I seem to be able to handle only photos that are simply visible on the email. I just spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get these photos of Henry (now Judd). No luck. I give up.)

Sasha is adopted!

Sasha had several people interested in her all at one time. She was adopted by the first couple who got to the store today, because the home visit checked out very well and we were sure that she would get everything she needed. The couple is willing to travel all the way across town to go to the same trainer (Kristi) who worked with Sasha for a week at her home last month. This lovely couple had lost their elderly Golden Retriever to cancer two weeks ago, and they were still very sad over it. They need Sasha to love, and Sasha needs them! The couple's previous Golden loved to swim in their pool, and Sasha seemed very happy to see the large pool and back yard too. There was a room with dog toys in a basket and a nice couch that Sasha can lie on. Her new guardian mom got her some water in a fancy elevated dog dish, and Sasha lapped it up! Her new guardian dad took her out to the back yard again as Susan and I slipped out the front, and said goodbye to a very grateful new guardian mom.

It's time for Sasha to go in and check out the inside of the house.

"Great pool," says Sasha.

Both Sasha and her new dad are happy.

Sasha drinks from her elevated water bowl.

We're sorry that we didn't have two or three Goldens like Sasha to please the other folks who had planned and hoped for Sasha to be their pet. Sasha's new guardians had also just submitted an application to a Golden Retriever rescue group and will cancel that now. Maybe the other families can find their Goldens through that kind of a rescue group.

We're very grateful to these high school students for volunteering. Above they're all giving Macy extra attention.

Colby also found a new home

Colby also found a new home. Pat Seward and Consuelo did the home visit, and everything went very well we heard! Angela took some pictures, which we may post later if we can figure out how to receive them.

Email from Pat S., Adoption Day Volunteer, concerning Colby's short-lived adoption

Last Saturday (January 24th), a young couple, Jody and Jason from Frisco, came to Straydog Adoption Day at PetsMart to find their first "child," and they found Colby, our beautiful Rottweiler. I believe they had seen Colby on Straydog's pages on Petfinder.org, and knew he would be there that Saturday. Colby liked (approved) of them right away, and Jody and Jason felt the same way, so they spent a long time getting to know and learn about each other. As it was later in the afternoon [last week], they went home to think about Colby and the things they knew had to be done to prepare their home for him and to also find an obedience class for them to attend together. They found a trainer at the Frisco PetsMart who will start a "Big Dog" obedience class soon. Jody & Jason along with one set of Colby's "grandparents to be" came in early this Saturday [yesterday] to see Colby. Everything went extremely well, so we went on the home visit. Colby fell in love with the beautiful new home and big back yard that he would run and play in. Colby also loved "his" new outdoor grill and can't wait until their first cookout! Inside the home, Colby found what he thought was his first new toy, Jody's house shoe, and took off to the back yard with it which he reluctantly gave back with only the promise that he would get his own toys. Colby told us he loved his new parents and home, so we left him with them. They were planning on leaving soon to go shopping at PetsMart--top of the list: chew toys! Colby is a very happy and lucky pup who will be pampered and much loved in his wonderful forever home.

Jason calls this morning and says they'll have to return Colby

This couple needs a dog who's already house broken, Jason said. They will both be out of the house too many hours every day to leave Colby in a crate during their absence.

We're very sorry this adoption didn't work out.

Our briefly vacant kennel will again be occupied by Colby

For a few hours we were making plans to get new arrivals, Jordan and Baby Girl, into a full-size kennel, but now we're right back where we were yesterday before Colby's adoption. We'll probably try Colby with Kerry, and if this works, we'll again have an empty kennel to put Jordan and Baby Girl in.

Excerpts from an email from Gayle concerning Rudy and our next step in his case

Bill,

Jim and I strongly believe that valuable time has already been lost in seeking a definitive diagnosis and, hopefully, treatment for Rudy.

One of Phoenix's doctors
[Phoenix is Gayle and Jim's original dog] is there [at Dallas Veterinary Diagnostic Center] (Dr. Bronstad), and I am sure he would agree to see Rudy. We will pay whatever costs are associated with this referral - I will come and get Rudy myself if necessary.

I apologize for being intrusive, but we believe that time is of the essence. I'll talk with you Monday.

Thank you.

Gayle

Thank you so much, Gayle!

And there's no need to apologize. We do not consider your suggestions an intrusion. We welcome them! We will have Dr. Morton refer Rudy to the Dallas Veterinary Diagnostic Center first thing Monday and will make an appointment for as soon as they can fit Rudy in.

Straydog Inc. is a 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Non-Profit Corporation - DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE
(As always, complete financial records are available on request.)

Since Pat's death (6/1/03) Bill Arnold continues to work (without pay) every day for Straydog Inc., managing
the shelter exactly as Pat would have wanted. Pat and Bill's four children (all in their 30s and 40s with
full-time jobs) are also helping out a lot at Straydog, trying to carry on their mother's mission of
providing decent lives for dogs who have no one.

Straydog, our Happy Home for Strays
(The hexagon is "The Big Play Yard," which we usually refer to as "the park")
(Photo taken May 2002)

Straydog is a "lifeboat" (and sanctuary) for rescued dogs. A vacant spot in a kennel is an empty seat in our "lifeboat,"
so please, if you're interested in adopting a dog, see our "Dogs for Adoption" link below, or call to inquire about dogs
you may have seen recent photos of but who may not yet be included in our "Dogs for Adoption" link.
And please
continue to support us. We will continue to row this "lifeboat" to shore, dropping off rescued dogs into the arms of
good adopters, and we will continue to fill the space left vacant by each adopted dog with another desperate
homeless dog for as long as we can hold on (financially). We believe that the example of our sacrifice (and the
example of the sacrifices made by the people running all other no-kill shelters) must be publicized to wake people up
and make them aware of the necessity to
SPAY and NEUTER their pets so that homeless dog-rescue "lifeboats" will
no longer be necessary. (Ditto for cats!)

"All stray dogs to lucky dogs ... NOW!"
