SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21 2004

Our Adoption Day van left at eight this morning for a home visit on the way

Susan H., one of our dedicated employee caregivers, has been our Adoption Day driver for the past several Saturdays, and she's handling the home visit for the two pugs on her way to the Plano PetsMart.

We received a report by phone from Susan after the home visit: The family had a nice house with a nice big yard, and they just loved the little pugs! The adoption is final, and we are all very happy about it.

Dogs attending our Adoption Day today are:

Colby

Kerry

Buster

Rosie

Emily

Please check out their photos and bios on the "Dogs for Adoption" link above.

Shawna had NOT been spayed, but now she has been spayed!

Dr. Morton called about six o'clock last evening to say that Shawna had come through her spay surgery just fine. "All her reproductive organs were there," the doctor said, "but now they're not."

We double checked Scottie, and he had and still has no testicles.

"And Scottie?" I asked. "How is it possible for a castrated dog to mate?"

"We don't know," Dr. Morton said, but there is anecdotal evidence of this phenomenon. The doctor went on to tell me about a neutered male he had years ago who mated with his unspayed female every time she came into estrus ("heat").

At least there can be no conception in cases like this, I said to myself. No puppies and no surplus dogs can result from such a union, only to have to be euthanized later because no one can take care of them. And, I also thought, I'm glad Shawna couldn't have conceived via Scottie's mating with her and that there was no abortion along with her spay surgery.

CONCEPTION CONTROL (as I have stressed many, many times on this website and in our newsletters) is the only acceptable way to achieve and maintain a sustainable population of dogs (and cats). No killing in any way whatsoever is ever needed to realize this goal.

Shawna will be ready to come home Monday morning.

Katie is still with us and will be at least until Monday

The warmer weather is giving Katie a little enjoyment as she still goes to the park and walks and walks and walks. She's eating at least some of her meals and very much looks forward to her cookies (dog biscuits) after each outing in the park. Our vet clinic is closed today and tomorrow, so we'll reassess the situation again Monday morning.
