Becky
loses half her ear!
Bill Arnold's Daily Straydog
Log
SUNDAY FEBRUARY
29 2004
Becky loses half her ear,
and we're not sure how
Caregiver/dog
walker, Bobby, yells over the radio: "Becky's covered with
blood. Somebody come quick!"
The
blood was coming from the outer edges of what was left of Becky's
ear, which had been torn half off. There hadn't been the sound
of a dog fight or any yelps, and she and her kennel mate, Bear
II, weren't fighting now, so we're not sure what could have happened.
These two kennel mates usually get along well, though they tussle
a lot. We're leaning toward believing that she must have caught
her ear on the protruding end of a fence wire and ripped it by
pulling away from the fence, but we haven't been able to find
the missing piece of her ear, which must have been about an inch
wide.
We
finally got the bleeding stopped by putting flour on her ear and
by squeezing the torn edge with paper towels. Then Juana bandaged
the ear and taped it to the top of Becky's head. After that we
put an E-collar on the dog, and left her in one of the hospital
kennels, where she didn't behave very well because she doesn't
get along with any of the other dogs who are in the hospital.
Juana puts flour
on the bleeding ear while Tina holds Becky.

of flour on her ear.
Juana's squeezing
Becky's ear with paper towels, trying to get the bleeding to stop.
Next Dr. Juana
taped the bandages onto Becky's ear.
While
all the above was going on, I was trying to reach a vet who would
be available to help us. Three different vets didn't answer.
We
finally got ahold of the Tyler Animal Emergency Clinic, and the
vet said to bring the dog in, so Tina left at about 10:00 on the
hour-long drive to Tyler. At 11:30 Tina called and said the vet
had said we'd done a good job stopping the bleeding. The doctor
dressed the wounded ear again and told us to use one of the antibiotics
we have in supply here at Straydog and to keep the dog in one
of our hospital kennels for at least a week. Tina paid the $107
bill and is now on her way back to Straydog.
No adoptions yesterday but
a few possible adoptions for next week
We
took lots of photos and will be posting them this afternoon (if
there are no more emergencies).
Five pages of photos from Saturday Adoption
Day
Also we just had a very
heavy rainstorm, which lasted about 15 minutes
That
was all the rain we got. Later in the afternoon the sun came out.

Since Pat's death (6/1/03)
Bill Arnold continues to work (without pay) every day for Straydog
Inc., managing
the shelter exactly as Pat would have wanted. Pat and Bill's four
children (all in their 30s and 40s
with full-time jobs) are also helping out a lot at Straydog, trying
to carry on their
mother's mission of providing decent lives for dogs who have no
one.
Straydog is a "lifeboat"
(and sanctuary) for rescued dogs. A vacant spot in a kennel is
an empty seat in our "lifeboat,"
so, if you're interested in adopting a dog, see our website "Dogs
for Adoption" link, or call to inquire about dogs
you may have seen recent photos of but who may not yet be included
in our "Dogs for Adoption" link. And
please continue to support us. We will continue to row this "lifeboat"
to shore, dropping off rescued
dogs into the arms of good adopters, and we will continue to fill
the space left vacant by each
adopted dog with another desperate homeless dog for as long as
we are able to hold on
(financially). We believe that the example of our sacrifice (and
the example of
the sacrifice made by the people running all other no-kill shelters)
must be
publicized to wake people up and make them aware of the necessity
to
SPAY and NEUTER their dogs (and cats) so that homeless dog
(and cat) rescue "lifeboats" will no longer be necessary.
"All stray dogs to lucky dogs ... NOW!"
FEBRUARY 2004
Before she lost consciousness
forever after suffering a brain aneurysm, Pat Arnold spoke
these final words to her kennel team members: " Take
care of my dogs while I'm gone."

Thanks
so much to all of our contributors! We couldn't keep this operation
going without you. Pat always said you all would continue to support
us, and you have. And we at Straydog continue to rescue, care
for and adopt out homeless dogs exactly the way Pat would have
wanted. Thank you so much for your continuing support! ... Bill Arnold
