Holly seems okay; Grace is sick

Bill Arnold's Daily Straydog Log

THURSDAY MARCH 4 2004

Puppy Holly seems okay, but her sister, Grace, wouldn't eat this morning

The doctor said at eight o'clock this morning to start Grace on the IV fluids if she begins to vomit or has diarrhea. A couple of hours later Grace did vomit after having no food since last night. Juana has arranged a hospital kennel for Grace across the "ward" from her sister, who seems to be totally recovered (good appetite, perfect stools, playful), but Holly will have to remain in the hospital at least for the rest of the week. We're all hoping and praying that Grace will recover as quickly as her sister, Holly, did.

Just before noon Grace's temperature was 104 degrees. She's on IV fluids and special medicines.

Juana inserts the needle to give Grace subcutaneous fluids (not really an IV, tho the vets called it an IV)

Juana comforts Puppy Grace while giving her the fluids.

For a while after receiving the fluids there's a large puff on the back of the pup's neck till the liquid is absorbed.

Puppy William, alone in his small kennel, has shown no symptoms of illness yet

The only thing that's bothering this little guy is that his two new playmates (Holly and Grace) were separated from him after having just moved in with them on Monday. He's still got his appetite and has good stools and is having a lot of puppy fun.

SJ called with an update on Dewey

Dewey is doing fine, and SJ is taking the dog to her adoption days at a PetCo in the Dallas area. She told me that a woman named Pam B. (yes, the same Pam B. who has helped Straydog so much over the years) saw Dewey and asked if there was anything she and her husband could do for Dewey. SJ told Pam that Dewey still needed the "quad cart" that would let him pull himself around the yard with his front feet and legs only (as Dewey's hind legs are paralyzed due to having been hit by a car). The cart has to be custom designed to fit Dewey, and will cost over $600. Pam told SJ to order the cart and that she would cover the expense. Thanks so much to Pam and Gary for helping Dewey!
