NOON UPDATE

Puppy Summer dies of Parvo

Puppy Summer dies of Parvo Virus

Yesterday afternoon, not long after I posted the noon update saying that Puppy Summer was holding her own, the beautiful little baby suddenly began slipping very fast. She had lapped up a little bit of soup in the morning, and had appeared to be gaining a little strength on her last potty walk, but then later back in her inside kennel she got very weak and couldn't even hold her head up. We gave her subcutaneous fluids, and we tried to no avail (as it was Sunday) to get both of our regular vets on the phone. We were getting ready to rush the puppy on the 50-mile trip to the Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Tyler when Puppy Summer went into convulsions and died.

Over the years we've seen several pups beat Parvo Virus and recover, and we've seen several succumb to the deadly disease. You do all you can, everything the vets say to do, and you just hope and pray, and the pups either make it or they don't. You rejoice when they make it, and you cry a lot when they don't.

How sad! The poor little puppy won't grow up to be a dog. She never even got to go to the big play yard one time. Take care of her, Pat. Tell her about all the things her three sisters will hopefully get to experience.

Puppy Summer's three sisters seem okay except for diarrhea

Erin is at Morton Small Animal Clinic now with these three rambunctious and still seemingly healthy sisters. If Dr. Morton determines they've already got Parvo, we can only hope that their immune systems are enough stronger than Puppy Summer's was to get them through the illness.

Big Puppy Dog Jackson joins us

Jack Jones, a longtime supporter of our shelter, who rescued Big Black Lab Jack (whom the Grisak's adopted back in 1999), and then rescued Jackie just recently (who's now kenneling with Pokey) has just rescued another fella, whom we're squeezing into our shelter population somehow. Tina went to Mr. Jones' house in Oak Cliff and picked up little Jackson yesterday. The rescued stray will be going to Dr. Morton's for his new arrivals checkup this afternoon.
