Ol' Jed's doing fine after his surgery

Hi Bill,
Sorry, I've been working so many hours this week I haven't checked mail for a couple of days. Jed is doing great! He's lying here next to me now and is back to normal. The doctor let me pick him up last Sunday night, and after nearly 48 hours in the clinic he was sure glad to see me - I thought he was going to break his tail off it was wagging so hard.
He had to spend three days eating only a special food the clinic gave me - I think it was 'extra-bland' but Ol' Jed liked it anyway. He's now back on his normal food (mostly a mix of canned and dry Nutro). The difference is that he now eats four or five small meals daily instead of two larger ones. This is supposed to help keep the condition from occurring again. Apparently, his stomach had gotten bloated which led to the problem. The vet told me this is pretty common with older dogs.
The vet who did the operation said Jed's liver looked great for his age, and he has a strong steady heartbeat, which is good news, because I really love the old guy and want him to be happy and healthy.
He'll get his stitches removed next week.
I've gotta tell you that it was pretty scary when Jed got sick so suddenly. I'm just glad I'm lucky enough to live close to an after-hours emergency clinic. Thanks to everyone for their concern about Jed. He and I really appreciate it.
Regards,
Larry
We're glad to hear Jed's doing great; his twisted (or turned) stomach problem happened to one of our dogs on this date, July 17, back in 1988
Unfortunately we were not living anywhere near an emergency clinic, and we couldn't get our beloved Rocco to the vet on time.
Rocco was a German Shepherd mix, who had been winning a battle with cancer (an osteo sarcoma on his wrist) for 15 months and 11 days when he suddenly died of a twisted stomach.
Our vet at the time (and several other vets whom our vet consulted with) couldn't believe Rocco had not succumbed to the cancer within four to eight weeks after the diagnosis in April of 1987, but Pat and I put Rocco on a 100%, very clean macrobiotic diet consisting of mostly brown rice and steamed fresh vegetables (which took several hours of cooking time every day), and old Rocco, who was then 12 years old, stayed in remission until he died of the same stomach ailment Ol' Jed just survived.
I wrote a song the next day (July 18, 1988) called "Looking For My Old Friend, Rocco," which I'll play and sing for you some time on this website on an MPEG file--if I ever get time.
