Bill Arnold's Daily Straydog Log

FRIDAY August 19 2005

No more radio shows till things settle down a bit with my father, who's just had a stroke.

5:00 P.M. UPDATE

Dad's not doing much better, and he's angry

     I arrived at the hospital at 7:10 this morning and the night nurse told me Dad had had a bad night, continually trying to raise himself up to attempt an "escape." She had finally given him a sedative about an hour before I got there. He was asleep but breathing very hard, and they had put the oxygen dispensing tubes in his nose. He again wanted no breakfast when it came to his room, and again gave the nurses a hard time whenever they tried to do anything for him.

     Dad often told me that he wasn't afraid of dying. He was only afraid of having a stroke or that some other potentially debilitating event might happen to him. And now what he feared the most has happened, and he doesn't like it and he's quite angry about it. And Dad's anger spilled over to the nursing station, indirectly causing a nurse and an orderly to get into an argument, which caused a passing doctor to tell them to be quiet! (Dad didn't hear any of this, because I had taken his hearing aid out in an attempt to get him to sleep.)

     Dad's doctors are worried about the possibility of another stroke and said the only thing we can do is take this one day at a time. They also advised that we find a skilled nursing facility for Dad as soon as possible, which we are already working on.

     Thanks to Deana & Jim, Greta, Charlie & Sharon, Chuck and Michelle for your kind emails concerning Dad.

No time for more today;

I've got to get back to the hospital
