5:00 P.M. UPDATE
My father's doctors released him from the hospital this morning as he has improved enough to be cared for now in a skilled nursing facility. Though he dreaded even the thought of it, he had said on more than one occasion that if he should ever have to go into a nursing home, he wanted to go where Mom had spent the last year of her life in the early 1990s. (Mom had also had a stroke, but it was on the right side, leaving her aphasiac for the entire 19 months between the time of her stroke and her death on June 11, 1993.)
When the ambulance drivers wheeled dad into his new room, he looked very worried, and he asked if this was the same room Mom had been in. We told him no but it was just like it, and he started to cry. We reassured him everything was going to be all right. After Dad met his room mate, ate some of his lunch and got settled in a bit, I came over to Dad's house to do this update as quickly as I can so I can get back over to the nursing home to visit with him.

Mr. Tom Shrout of Benbrook, Texas drove over 100 miles to our shelter today to meet Jeannie. He had spoken with Juana several times on the phone after having seen Jeannie on our website and just couldn't believe that Jeannie had not been adopted in the year and a half we have had her.
Tom brought pictures of his house and fenced yard and showed us where Jeannie would be living if we would adopt the sweetie to him! She would be a pampered, inside companion with a wonderful yard with lots of bushes and flowers!
Tom also was talking with Annette with Animal Guardians and wants to adopt a male chow companion for Jeannie through Animal Guardians. We suggested that he get Jeannie settled in first and then try the dogs together. Jeannie is his first choice if the dogs don't get along.
We gave Tom some of Jeannie's special venison dog food (for her skin allergies) and small quantities of her supplements. Tom had already bought toys and supplies so Jeannie is all set!
We're sure Jeannie will love being an inside dog again with a special dad to love her.
Tom made an extra donation to Straydog and seemed very pleased with his new, shy, beautiful canine friend!
Juana reports ...
This morning I took all six puppies to the vet for their 2nd set of shots and to have them rechecked for worms. For our last grooming visit for this summer I took Bobby and Scruffy.
It was fun to carry the pups in the van crate. All the puppies are double the size they were the first time they went to the vet. Tina, Rita, Jose and Jeff helped me load up the van with all doggies, so I could leave ASAP.

When I got to the clinic, I took in Scruffy without a problem. With Bobby I had to ask for help, so two vet techs helped me lift the crate out of the van, and we tried to walk Bobby in. He was very, very worried and scared. I wanted the doctor to look at Bobby before he got shaved by the groomer, because as we all know Bobby has that hair problem that we've been trying to deal with, and it hasn't gotten any better. The doctor saw Bobby and right away remembered him. Besides his hip and leg problems, he has this dry, wiry hair problem. Dr. Morton said that Bobby is still a young dog (six or seven), and he suggested that we take Bobby to the Dermatology Specialist Clinic in Dallas. Meanwhile we can start doing T4 blood work and see where we are now. After the doctor finished with Bobby, he didn't have any problem going back to the van. Bobby didn't get a haircut today. Dr. Morton said the dermatologist needs to see the condition of his hair.

Then we brought in the puppy crate and one by one we weighed them. Donna was very surprised to see how big our puppies have gotten. She checked them for hooks and they still have a few, so she wormed them again. They also got their 2nd set of puppy shots. Donna told me to worm them again Friday and then they should be ready for Adoption Day on Saturday.
I left Scruffy there to be groomed, and Erin will be going later to pick him up. We should have the blood work results back tomorrow on Bobby.
