No emergencies this cold and rainy day
Today was a very nasty, rainy and cold day. There was a high of 44 degrees today, but it felt so much colder. Roberto, the night shift guy, said that it started raining about 4:00 this morning. Then it kept raining from when we (the day crew) started at 6:00 until about 10:00 this morning. Then we got a little break before some more rain moved in later on in the day. I am glad that today is the last day of rain for a few days. The next few days are supposed to be pretty. But even with the nasty weather today was a good day here at Straydog. There were no emergencies, but we did have a vet visit scheduled for this morning.
Tallie is being watched for her kidney levels
This morning David took Tallie to get her BUN level of her kidneys checked again. Tallie has been on this strong dose of Gentocin shots for about two weeks now. We have to check Tallie's kidneys every week to make sure that she's not going into kidney failure from this terribly strong medicine. Just like every medicine has side effects, Gentocin has kidney failure as a side effect. Tallie had an appointment at 10:00 this morning to have blood work done. The only reason that we are using the Gentocin shots is because we have tried everything else for her, and we can't get this bacterial skin infection to go away. It was just getting worse and the Gentocin shots really seem to help. When David returned with Tallie, he told me that her BUN level was a little higher than it had been the last time, but she is still in the normal range, which is a good thing. Dr. Terry wants to keep giving Tallie the Gentocin shots and 10 mg of Prednisone. But she wants us to give her the Prednisone only with her p.m. meals for five days. Then we'll give her the Prednisone with her p.m. meals, every other day, for five days. Dr. Terry also said to bring Tallie in next Monday, so that she can get her BUN numbers checked again to make sure that they don't get any higher.
Lady is still limping
Our park dog walker, Sherri, reported that while Lady and Jackson were in the park this morning, Lady was still limping pretty badly on her left back leg. Lady had an ACL surgery in 2008 on her right back knee and now her other leg seems to be bothering her. Lady has been limping for about two or three weeks. We've been giving her pain medicine, and it doesn't seem to be helping her one bit, which more than likely means it's not just a bruise. Since Lady is still limping and the pain medicine isn't helping her, she will have to go to the vet, be examined and have some x-rays done. I brought Lady inside for the day and night to see if resting might help her. If not, Lady will be going to Morton Clinic tomorrow morning for x-rays. Hopefully it's not another torn ACL! We can't afford it.
