Lacie reports ...        Edited and posted by Bill

Another good day at Straydog

It was another nice day at Straydog. It wasn't too cold this morning, with the overnight low at about 45 degrees at six a.m. It took a while to warm up because it was very cloudy, but it finally go up to a high of 59 degrees by late afternoon. It was a good day here at Straydog. We didn't have any emergencies, but we did have to make a trip to the vet. Thank goodness we had a full, hard-working crew.

Five dogs with ringworm (at 12/12/11)

Our ringworm count is still at five dogs: Nelson, Aggie, Travis, Brian and Terry are the dogs who still have this awful fungus. I know the dogs and our crew are really looking forward to getting rid of this fungus, so everybody can go to the park again. Hopefully, they will be clear of this awful fungus soon!

Zack seemed to be feeling a little better today

Zack seemed more active and he even looked happier. He didn't look sick at all. He also had much better stool today and he didn't have diarrhea. Zack is still eating and drinking well, and he will be going back to Morton Clinic tomorrow for a checkup. Let's hope that he continues to get better and that we get some good news tomorrow!

Our Doby-boy is still doing well

We rescued this big guy about two months ago. He is very sweet, energetic, handsome and playful. When we rescued Doby, he was so very skinny and he had some skin issues, because of fleas, and he had hookworms. We took him to the vet, where he was treated for the hookworms and fleas and he got his shots. Doby has gained a little weight, but not as much as we would like, because he's so active. His skin looks so much better and he doesn't have any more fleas, bald spots or sores. He's also been clear of hookworms for about a month now. We are so glad to see this boy doing so much better. We are so lucky that we have wonderful donors and we were able to rescue this big guy. We literally saved his life. Now Doby is so happy. He loves his caregiving time and park time. He loves getting four meals a day and his cookies. And he loves playing ball and running.

Doby is a very beautiful dog.

Update on Blind Dog Cesar

Blind Cesar, whom we rescued in August of this year, is now doing so very well. Cesar had a very rough life before he came to Straydog. When we rescued this sweet boy, he was half dead. He was just skin and bones, and he had a terrible odor. His head and his neck were swollen, and they were huge. He was badly injured from either a snake or spider bite, and it caused the most awful open wound on his neck that I have ever seen. While he was recovering from that bite, he had to have emergency surgery for a stomach blockage.

We prayed for Cesar, and we promised him that if he'd pull through, we would give him a great life here at Straydog, and that's what we are doing. After everything that Cesar has gone through, I can tell you that he is the happiest dog ever now. He loves his toys, especially his ball. He loves getting three meals a day and his cookies. He also loves his caregiving and park time. Cesar is an absolutely wonderful dog. When I look at him and see how happy he is, it always makes me smile.

Cesar is now a very happy dog.

I would like to give a big thanks to you, our wonderful contributors. Without your continued support, there's no way that we would be able to carry out our mission and help doggies like Doby and Cesar. You are such an integral part of what we do, and we are so very grateful for each and every one of you!

Joey and Rex see Dr. Wingo

This morning James had to take Joey and Rex to Van Zandt Animal Care Clinic. They had a 10:00 appointment to see Dr. Wingo. It was about 8:00, when James and I helped Joey and Rex into the van, and James then left with them for Wills Point, Texas. Joey needed to have Dr. Wingo check his leg six weeks after having had tightrope surgery for a torn ACL, and Dr. Wingo also wanted to take a look at Rex's leg.

Rex settles into his crate in the back of the van.

Joey is a little reluctant to get in the van.

    Joey

When James returned to Straydog about 11:30 a.m., he said that we are to keep Joey on limited exercise. Dr. Wingo said that Joey's leg is still doing well, and it is healing, but it's just healing a little slower than usual. In most cases, the dog's leg is healed by now and then he would be able to resume normal exercise. Dr. Wingo said that Joey's leg is still a little swollen and he wants us to keep walking him on a double leash. We'll have to take him back to see Dr. Wingo in a couple of weeks, to have his leg checked again. Hopefully that will be the last checkup for our boy and he will be able to go back to his normal routine. I know he just can't wait to be able to run and play again.

Dr. Wingo thoroughly examines Joey.

    Rex

James reported that after Dr. Wingo examined Rex's leg and took some x-rays, the doctor said that Rex does have a torn ACL. The doctor wants to perform a tightrope surgery on Rex too. Now we just have to come up with $1,900 for the surgery, as that is how much they told us it would cost. I really feel sorry for Rex, because his leg really hurts him. He never wants to put pressure on it and he limps around all of the time. Rex isn't very happy about having to stay in a crate in Hospital Two. He can't be allowed to run and play with his best friend Nikki. Nikki and Rex really miss each other. I hope that we'll be able to come up with the money soon. Poor Rex!

Dr. Wingo meets Rex.

Dr. Wingo is fixin' to check Rex's ear.

Rex is sedated so they can get good x-rays.

Rex lies calm as can be on the x-ray table.

Dr. Wingo feels Rex's torn ACL.
